The LuEsther T. Mertz Library Reopening Plan & Services: Library Services

Library Services Overview

The Library Reopening Plan consists of 4 phases. Below are the listed services that will be available in each phase of the Library Reopening Plan.

Phase 1: Reference services and reduced Inter Library Loan services.

Phase 2: Reference services continue, curbside circulation services begin for NYBG Staff, and scanning and imaging services resume.

Phase 3: Reference services continue, archives requests and scans resume, curbside circulation services continue for NYBG Staff, and Inter Library Loan services resumes.

Phase 4: Full Library services resume with limited capacity for onsite research. Research by appointments only.

Curbside Pick-up/Drop-off Services

Mertz Library Curbside Services are now available to on-site NYBG Staff as part of the Phase 2 - Library Reopening Plan.

To make a request, please fill out the Library Curbside Service Request Form.

Library Card & Account FAQs

NYBG member, student, staff member, or volunteer, you can sign up for a library card in order to check out items from our print and view digital collections.

Already have a library card but have misplaced or forgotten your barcode? No worries! Contact libref@nybg.org and ask a librarian to retrieve it for you.

If you don't have a card yet, sign up for one today!

Library Account FAQs

How do I return books?

At this time we are encouraging all Library patrons to hold their library materials until they can return safely to the library in Phase 4 - Library Reopening Plan. If you need to return materials sooner, please contact the Library Reference account at libref@nybg.org to speak with a librarian.

How can I extend my due date?

Please read: Renewing Materials

Will I be charged a late fee?

No. Until services resume to full capacity in Phase 4 - Library Reopening Plan all library fees are waived.

Can I check out new books?

Circulation privileges for all library card holders will be available in Phase 4 - Library Reopening Plan.

What do I do if my account expires?

Email the Library Reference account at libref@nybg.org to update your account information. You will need your NYBG member number, member expiration date and current contact information.

Reference Services

Reference services are available in all phases of the Library Reopening Plan. We can help you with:

  • Access to print and digital library collections
  • Searching library databases and general search strategies
  • Virtual library instruction and orientation via video call
  • Virtual one on one reference via phone or video call
  • Recommending books for readers of all ages
  • Evaluating sources and research methodologies

InterLibrary Loan and Scanning Requests

With your Library card you can request book chapters and journal articles through interlibrary loan. Unfortunately at this time we are unable to get physical or e-books for you through this service. For scanning requests of items in the Mertz Library Collections, please fill out the interlibrary loan form or email libref@nybg.org

Digital Collections & Electronic Databases

With your library card you can access our electronic resources and journals from home, using these instructions. Not sure of your library barcode? No problem! Email libref@nybg.org and we will let you know what it is.
