Aven Nelson, 1859-1952, was an American botanist who specialized in plants of the Rocky Mountains. A collecting trip in Wyoming resulted in the establishment of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium in 1893, which has since grown to 800,000 specimens. He was one of the founding professors of the University of Wyoming and was an enthusiastic and influential Professor of Botany. His contributions to the progress of botanical science endures to this day.
