South Carolina Native Plant Society

  

The South Carolina Native Plant Society is dedicated to preserving, protecting and restoring native plant communities in South Carolina. They have five chapters located throughout the state.

  • Southcoast Chapter
    The newest chapter established in 2008 and based in the Beaufort and Hilton Head areas.

A Native of South Carolina

The Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis L.

The Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis L., is a species of flowering plant in the coffee family. This showy, fragrant flower is attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies and deer. It is found in eastern North America from Nova Scotia west to Minnesota and south to Florida and eastern Texas.

Historical Notes

William Bartram,1739-1823, was an American naturalist. He was also the son of naturalist John Bartram. He accompanied his father on his travels throughout the eastern United States. He became accomplished with his drawings of flora and fauna at a young age. His studies in the Carolinas are covered in his book Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, and east and west Florida.
