Conservation Resources in the New York Metropolitan Area: Education and Reuse Organizations

Conservation Education and Training:

Bronx Green-Up! - A community gardening outreach program of The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx Green-Up! provides horticulture education, training and technical assistance to Bronx residents, community gardeners, urban farmers, local schools and community organizations.

Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies - Cary Institute is an independent, environmental, research organization located in Milbrook, NY that offers public education through a monthly lecture series, outdoor weekend education and a summer day camp. Areas of expertise include disease ecology, forest and freshwater health, climate change, urban ecology and invasive species.

The Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education - This organization prepares K through 12 school systems to educate for a sustainable future through curriculum consultation, seminars and workshops.

Cornell University Cooperative Extension - The Cooperative Extension System for New York State, Cornell offers abundant scientifically based, ecologically-sound, horticultural and environmental information of use to the home or professional gardener.

Green Guerrillas - Green Guerrillas helps young community members sustain vital grassroots groups and cultivate healthy community gardens through plant giveaways, training, community organizing activities, fund-raising assistance and youth engagement programs.

The Horticultural Society of New York - Founded in 1900, the mission of The Horticultural Society of New York is to enhance our City’s environmental and cultural life by providing unique educational, vocational and therapeutic outreach programs, library resources and art exhibitions.

Partnership for Parks - Part of the City Parks Foundation, Partnerships for Parks is a public-private program that supports and champions a growing network of leaders caring and advocating for neighborhood green spaces. They equip people, organizations and government with the skills and tools they need to transform spaces into dynamic community assets. Programs include the It's My Park volunteer service program.

Trees New York - Trees New York is an environmental nonprofit organization whose mission is to plant, preserve and protect New York City’s urban forest through education and community participation. Trees New York has 39 years of experience in community tree planting projects, tree care management and consulting and stewardship training projects to teach members of NYC’s communities to care for the urban forest. 

Salvage and Reuse Organizations:

BIG Reuse - Located in Brooklyn, BIG Reuse is a non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials, with a mission to keep these materials out of the landfill, while offering deep discounts on their resale.

Materials for the Arts - Materials for the Arts is a New York City reuse center, providing a way for companies and individuals to donate unneeded supplies to thousands of nonprofit organizations with arts programming and to public schools. In addition to warehousing and facilitating donation of these free materials, they offer a wide variety of events, workshops and classes to help people see and experience creative reuse up close. The MFTA warehouse, in Long Island City, is operated by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with additional support from the City's Departments of Sanitation and of Education and support from a not-for-profit strategic partner.

Recycle-A-Bicycle - Recycle-A-Bicycle is a community-based bike shop and non-profit organization that facilitates job training and environmental education. On average, RAB salvages 1,800 bicycles each year from the waste stream, diverting a total of 45,000 pounds of waste from NYC's landfills. Each purchase from the storefronts in Manhattan and Brooklyn directly supports youth programs and environmental initiatives.
