Great Plains Native Plant Society

       

The Great Plains Native Plant Society is based in South Dakota but anyone interested in the Great Plains and its native plants can join this organization. Please see the North Dakota page for more information on this Society. They sponsor field trips with other organizations throughout the Midwest in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.

A Native Anemone

The American Pasque Flower, Pulsatilla hirsutissima

The American Pasque Flower, Pulsatilla hirsutissima, is the state flower of South Dakota. From the genus Anemone the flowers can be purple, blue or white. The name “pasque” was given to it due to its early flowering near Easter.

Diverse Wildflower Display

South Dakota Badlands National Park contains one of the largest contiguous native mixed-grass prairies under federal protection in the United States. There is a great deal of harsh terrain but it also displays a diversity of colorful flowers especially during years of sufficient rainfall.
