Margaret Armstrong designed over 300 book covers between 1887 and 1912. For a great many of these designs she used botanical imagery, with varying degrees of trueness-to-life. In 1895 she began signing her book covers with her monogram, MA, which would become famous. These books by Armstrong are presented in order of publication date, featuring designs from 1893 through 1910, spanning most of her career. Note how her artistic choices – including the use of gold and colors – changed over time. Each color added meant more money for the publisher to pay, and of course gold was expensive. Armstrong was allowed to create costlier designs as her reputation and fame grew.
