Art and Nature: The Works of Margaret Armstrong: Influences and Times

Influences and Times

Born in New York City to stained glass artist D. Maitland Armstrong, Margaret Armstrong spent her life surrounded by artists at a time when art styles were changing rapidly and dramatically. During her formative years, Armstrong was exposed to – and influenced by – styles such as the stained-glass designs of her father and of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the Aesthetic Movement, here exemplified by John Ruskin (1819-1900), the Arts and Crafts Movement typified here by works by Walter Crane (1845-1915) and William Morris (1834-1896), and most significantly for many of Armstrong’s designs, Art Nouveau.
