Dead Formats: Computer Programs

Red binder with 2 large floppy disks in sleeves, printed garden plan, red, blue, and green cover showing a gardener

CompuGarden: The Blueprint for your Green Thumb

Three 5 ¼ inch floppy disks and accompanying manual; CompuGarden plan prepared for Debbie Lerer

Published 1985 by CompuGarden, Inc.

This computer program, “developed in collaboration with the New York Botanical Garden” (Manual, Credits), was created as a resource for all levels of vegetable gardeners, from beginners to expert horticulturists. Users can enter the vegetables they want to grow (pulling from a database of “over 80 vegetables, herbs and flowers” (p. 2)), and CompuGarden will produce a complete plan for the placement, amount, and potential yield of each selection. It also provides a visual garden map for each of the four seasons, crop rotation and gardening task schedules, and the ability to log plant productivity. The second binder is an example of a complete garden plan prepared using the CompuGarden program for NYBG employee Debbie Lerer.

WEEDS 2.0

3 ½ inch floppy disk and accompanying User’s Guide

Created by R.H. Callihan (Extension Weed Specialist), R.T. Dobbins (Programmer/Analyst), & S.L. Carson (Laboratory Aide)

Released 1993 by the University of Idaho Plant Science Division

WEEDS (Western Expert Educational Diagnostic System) 2.0 is “a user-friendly computer program, with custom menus and data base for identification of 970 of the western U.S.” (title page). Dividing weeds into “grass-like” and “non-grass-like,” the program prompts the user to indicate a series of properties that apply to a given plant specimen (Leaf length? Shape of Leaves? Plant height? Juice milky?...), eventually displaying a list of all the plants that match the selected characteristics.

Pilz2000, the computer program stored on this floppy disk, was created to complement, not replace, the paper-based mushroom identification tools included in the set. According to the publication’s website, the program expands on the book and cards by allowing for identification based on microscopic properties.
