When the New York Times headlined Everett’s September 1986 obituary with “Major Figure in Horticulture,” it was not hyperbole. More than three decades later, his legacy lives on at the Garden through his publications, programs, and plantings.

Rock Garden Plaque, 1987

Everett died in 1986 after a short illness, and the Garden commemorated his legacy by installing a plaque in the Rock Garden in his honor in 1987.

Today this 2.5-acre oasis boasts hundreds of jewel-like alpine flowers nestled among its gravel beds, rocks and crevices, and sweeps of rare and graceful woodland plants sheltered under mature spreading trees. A gently cascading waterfall and stream flow to a tranquil flower-rimmed pond.

Enid A. Haupt Conservatory

Today the landmark Enid A. Haupt Conservatory provides an ecotour around the world, featuring aquatic plants and vines, lush tropical rain forests, cactus-filled deserts, and many other natural habitats. Its newly restored palm dome is replanted with majestic soaring species from around the world.

Children’s Gardening Program

Today the Children’s Gardening Program offers the perfect way for kids to get outside and get their hands dirty. Guided by instructors, children plant, tend, and harvest fresh vegetables and herbs, and learn about topics from pollination to composting.

School of Professional Horticulture

Today the School seeks to educate and train motivated individuals in a supportive environment to become horticulturists of the highest caliber equipped to succeed in green industry leadership positions in both public and private sectors. The School combines academic studies with hands-on practical training in a two-year, full-time program.
