Schedule a Tour of the Library

The Library is happy to host classes of students within the K-12 age range.  Please email the Library if you would like to arrange a tour.  Tours are generally between 30 and 60 minutes and can be customized to meet the needs and interests of your group.  

Class activities are welcome, (such as storytime or drawing), but the Library does not provide craft supplies.

Digital Collections

  • Mertz Digital
    View digitized materials about the Garden, including historical photos, "Journal of the New York Botanical Garden" and "Bulletin of the New York Botanical Garden"
  • Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL)
    The Biodiversity Heritage Library improves research methodology by collaboratively making biodiversity literature openly available to the world as part of a global biodiversity community.
  • JSTOR Global Plants
    Global Plants is the world’s largest database of digitized plant specimens and a locus for international scientific research and collaboration.
  • Linnaeus Link
    Search the catalogue for Linnaean materials (including digital) held in libraries throughout the world. Linnaeus Link is a comprehensive international online Union Catalogue of Linnaean publications.
  • The C.V. Starr Virtual Herbarium
    The C. V. Starr Virtual Herbarium is the gateway to the digitized specimens of the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium. Currently, 2.5 million specimen records and 1.5 million images are available. Every month, about 20,000 new records and images are added.

Resources for K-12 Teachers

The LuEsther T. Mertz Library supports the educational mission of The New York Botanical Garden.  Additionally, the Library has many items that can be used to teach the NYC Science Curriculum.  (The full NYC Science Scope and Sequence for K-5 can be read here; the full NYC Science Scope and Sequence for 6-12 can be read here.)  Please see the lists below for recommended books from the Mertz Library's collections related to the NYC Science Curriculum.  All items may be used in the Library, where a full-color scanner is also available to use for free.  Please contact the Library with any questions about visiting to use our collections.

Library Hours

Monday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tuesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Please enter by the Mosholu Gate if using the Library on a Monday.  NYBG grounds are closed to the Public on Mondays, but the Library is open.  The Library is closed Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.  Library hours are subject to change during summer months.
